HOME REMODELING & HANDICAP MODIFICATIONS
Like the vast majority of people surveyed, veterans prefer to stay at home as they age. This often requires day-to-day help, caregiving assistance, or home remodeling and handicap modifications.

VETERANS AGING IN PLACE
It’s important to enable veterans to create a safe living environment for their own sense of self-reliance. Most prefer to live independently and prioritize their own needs.
This usually requires handicap modifications and home repairs. These changes will take into consideration disability or natural challenges associated with aging. Just a few examples include:
- Changing knobs to lever handles.
- Building a complete addition to an existing home.
- Entry ramps, doorways widened and flooring that allows for easy maneuvering for wheelchairs.
- Grab bars in key places in bathrooms.
Fortunately, there is support through many programs. These programs help aging or physically challenged veterans stay healthy and remain at home.
Veteran Housing
GRANTS FOR SENIORS
VA Aid & Attendance and Housebound Pension
This is the most well-known veterans benefits program, though many veterans are still unaware of this benefit. You may qualify if you’re eligible for the VA pension. You or your spouse must also need assistance for daily living or be largely housebound due to chronic illness or permanent disability. This benefit can also provide financial support for personal care services.
Veteran Directed Home and Community-Based Service Program (VD-HCBS)
The Administration on Aging offers Community Living Program Grants in partnership with the Veteran’s Health Administration. Eligible veterans require a nursing home level of care and are enrolled in the VA health care system. Services can be managed by the veteran or family caregiver, allowing the veteran to make their own decisions. The budget can be used to hire personal caregivers and purchase medical equipment. Or you can use the funds to make home modifications if it would lower care costs.
Other Grants
The VA also offers certain veterans one of three grants specifically intended to pay for home modifications to accommodate for their service-connected disabilities and, in some cases, for disabilities unrelated to their military service.
These grants are the Specially Adapted Housing (SAH) grant, the Special Housing Adaptation (SHA) grant and the Home Improvement and Structural Alteration (HISA) grant.
