BATHROOM REMODEL FOR DISABILITY: RETURN HOME AFTER STROKE

BRIEF DESCRIPTION

The purpose of this project was to remodel a first floor master bedroom and bathroom for the homeowner to return home post-stroke with accommodation for right-sided paralysis. The pre-existing bathtub/shower was replaced with a 5’ deep zero entry shower with a built-in bench, two showerheads – one handheld – with controls customized for left-handed use and temperature control.

The wheelchair accessible solution for the shower, showerheads and temperature controls made it adaptable for the spouse’s dual purpose use – with an option for regular/non-handicap use. The accessible bathroom remodel included a comfort height toilet, grab bars, and addition of a double vanity. The doorways to the bathroom and bedroom were enlarged to accommodate a wheelchair and the door swings were modified to improve accessibility.
